A villa or holiday rental in Mauritius gives you space and freedom, often for less than a hotel. But you give up hotel services: no beach shuttle, no on-site restaurant, no front desk to call a taxi at any hour. So the car question comes up as soon as you book.
Short answer: yes, in most cases
From a villa, you use the car every day: supermarket runs, getting to the beach if you are not on the seafront, dinners out and, of course, sightseeing. Taxis exist but costs add up quickly over one or two weeks, and evening rides need booking ahead. Buses are cheap but slow, stop early in the evening and are not great with shopping or children (see rentcar.mu/blog/se-deplacer-a-maurice-bus-taxi-voiture).
When you can manage without one
- Your villa is in central Grand Baie or Pereybère, within walking distance of the beach, shops and restaurants, and you plan very few trips.
- You have booked a driver for the whole stay, or organised tours with pick-up.
- You are only staying a few days and mostly plan to rest.
Before you book
- Check the villa has a parking space, or at least safe parking by the gate.
- Pick the right size: a 7-seater or an SUV with a big boot makes shopping and family outings easier (rentcar.mu/blog/quelle-voiture-louer-maurice).
- Ask for delivery to the villa: many local agencies deliver and collect at your address, such as Riding Car Hire (rentcar.mu/riding-car-hire).
- Rent from a licensed agency with yellow plates and a PSV licence (rentcar.mu/blog/loueur-agree-maurice-plaque-jaune-psv): a car lent by a private individual is not insured for rental.
