Renting a car in Mauritius — FAQ

The practical answers travellers ask most before hitting the road.

Licence & driver

What is the minimum age to rent a car in Mauritius?

The minimum age is 21. Drivers aged 21–24 pay a young-driver fee of Rs 350 per day. You must have held a valid licence for at least one year.

Do I need an international driving permit?

A valid national licence is enough if it's in the Latin alphabet (French, European, UK…). For a licence in another script, an international driving permit is recommended. Bring your licence and an ID at pick-up.

Driving in Mauritius

Which side of the road do you drive on in Mauritius?

In Mauritius you drive on the LEFT (British legacy). The steering wheel is on the right. Roads are good along the coast and the M1/M2 motorway links the airport to the north; drive carefully at night and in the rain.

Do I really need a car in Mauritius?

A rental car is the most practical way to explore the island at your own pace: northern beaches (Grand Baie, Trou aux Biches), the west (Flic en Flac, Tamarin), the wild south and the east (Belle Mare). Buses exist but are slow; taxis add up quickly over several days.

Pick-up

Can I pick up the car at SSR Airport?

Yes. Most agencies offer pick-up at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (Plaisance), at the desk or the arrivals exit, with hours aligned to flights. Provide your flight number when booking.

Can I return the car at a different location?

Yes, one-way rental (drop-off at a different place than pick-up) is available with many agencies for a flat fee of about Rs 1500. Specify the drop-off location when booking.

Insurance & deposit

How does the security deposit work?

The deposit is requested by the agency at vehicle pick-up (usually a card hold), and only kept if there is damage. It's returned when you bring the vehicle back if the inspection is clear. The amount depends on the vehicle category and the agency.

Is insurance included?

Yes, rentals include third-party insurance and collision damage waiver (CDW) with an excess. Some agencies offer an optional excess buy-back (deposit protection) to reduce your liability in case of an accident.

Booking

How do I book a car on RentCar.mu?

Pick your dates and area, compare available vehicles from local agencies, then book online. You can also submit a quote request (vehicle, dates, budget) and receive several agency offers. The vehicle inspection is done digitally at pick-up and return.

Which payment methods are accepted?

Booking online is free and requires no card: you pay the agency directly at vehicle pick-up, by card or in cash (Mauritian rupees). A card in the main driver's name may be required for the deposit.
