4x4, SUV and pick-up rental in Mauritius
A 4x4 is almost never essential in Mauritius: roads are overwhelmingly paved and the main sights (beaches, Chamarel, Le Morne, Grand Bassin) are reachable in a small car. A taller vehicle really pays off in a few specific cases: diving, fishing or kitesurf gear to carry, dirt tracks to a remote beach or trailhead, rutted lanes after heavy rain, or a big group with lots of luggage.
This page brings together the double-cab pick-ups with a load bed and the high-clearance SUVs currently offered by licensed agencies on RentCar.mu. Whether a vehicle is four-wheel or two-wheel drive depends on the version: ask the agency if you plan to drive real tracks.

Choosing your pick-up or SUV
- Double-cab pick-up: 5 seats plus a load bed for gear; long body (over 5 m), so plan ahead when parking in town.
- Compact SUV: high ground clearance and a raised driving position, with the footprint of a compact car.
- Automatic gearbox: a real comfort when you are new to driving on the left, and many recent fleets are fully automatic.
- Insurance: check what is covered off paved roads before heading onto a track.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need a 4x4 in Mauritius?
No. Roads are overwhelmingly paved and every major sight is reachable in a small car. An SUV or pick-up makes sense for bulky gear, a few dirt tracks or a large group.
Can you rent a pick-up truck in Mauritius?
Yes, some licensed agencies offer double-cab pick-ups with a load bed, handy for diving, fishing or kitesurf gear. The models currently available are listed on this page with their prices.
Are rental pick-ups and SUVs four-wheel drive?
Not necessarily: depending on the version, a pick-up or SUV can be two- or four-wheel drive. If you plan to drive real tracks, ask the agency for the exact drivetrain before booking.
