Long-term car rental in Mauritius
A month, a quarter, the length of an assignment or a move: in Mauritius, long-term rental saves you from buying a car on arrival, handling insurance and servicing, or relying on taxis while your own vehicle is on its way.
Monthly rates are not published: each agency quotes them according to duration, model and season. As a benchmark, the cheapest cars are currently Rs 1,300 per day on the platform; the easiest next step is to describe your needs in the quote form, pre-filled for 30 days, and receive offers from several licensed agencies.
Who is it for?
- Expats posted to Mauritius, while they find a home and decide whether to buy.
- Digital nomads and remote workers settled for several weeks or months.
- Long stays: retirees, visiting families, stays with relatives.
- Residents whose car is being repaired, imported or not yet delivered.
- Companies hosting an employee or consultant on assignment.
What to ask the agency
On a rental of a month or more, the terms matter as much as the price. Ask in writing for:
- The all-in monthly rate, and exactly what it covers (taxes, delivery, additional driver).
- Mileage: unlimited or capped, and the price per extra kilometre.
- Servicing: who handles maintenance and tyres, and how a replacement car works if it breaks down.
- Insurance: excess level, waiver options, cover for additional drivers.
- The deposit: amount, form (card hold or cash) and when it is returned.
- Extensions and early return: notice period, and the rate applied if you return the car early.
- Payment: upfront or monthly, by card or bank transfer.
Long-stay discounts and monthly rates
Some agencies on the platform apply an automatic discount from 7 or 30 days of rental, shown in the price breakdown when you book. For a true monthly rate, a quote request is still the right route: the agency takes the full duration, season and model into account, and may offer a different vehicle from the one displayed.
Include fuel in your monthly budget: unleaded is Rs 77.70 per litre since 29 September 2026, the same price at every station. Our fuel price page tracks it.
Licences: visitors, residents and conversion
For a tourist stay, most agencies accept a foreign licence written in English or French, shown in the original (see driving licences in Mauritius). For a long stay or a move, the rules differ, and public sources disagree on how long a foreign licence remains usable: check with the Traffic Branch of the Mauritius Police Force, and tell the agency.
If you settle in Mauritius, the Traffic Branch handles applications to convert a foreign licence into a Mauritian one. It asks in particular for an attestation of authenticity from the authority that issued your licence and a residence, work or occupation permit valid for at least six more months, with a conversion fee of Rs 1,500 after approval. The exact documents are listed on the Mauritius Police website.
Long-term rental or buying?
Renting leaves servicing, insurance and resale to the agency, and lets you change vehicle or stop. Buying makes sense once your move is confirmed for several years. In between, a one- to three-month rental gives you time to get to know the island, choose your neighbourhood and your daily commute before committing.
