Car rental in Mauritius for travellers from India
Good news for drivers from India: Mauritius drives on the left, just like at home. Steering wheel on the right, overtaking on the right, roundabouts taken clockwise: almost nothing needs relearning, which makes a self-drive holiday one of the easiest ways to explore the island with family or friends.
This page answers the questions we hear most from Indian visitors: which documents to bring, how the airport hand-over works, which cars suit a family, and how payment works. Below you will find the 7-seaters and SUVs that licensed agencies are offering right now, with their real price.
Your Indian licence and the International Driving Permit
Mauritian rental agencies need to see a valid licence they can read, and the original card must stay with you whenever you drive. Published guidance on how long a foreign licence can be used by a visitor varies, so we will not quote a figure the Mauritian authorities have not confirmed to us. Our practical advice is simple: bring your original Indian licence AND an International Driving Permit (IDP).
In India, the IDP is applied for online on the Parivahan portal (Form 4A) and issued by your licensing authority, so apply as soon as your trip is booked. It cannot be obtained once you are in Mauritius: the Mauritius Police issue IDPs on the basis of a Mauritian licence and national identity card. An IDP is a translation, valid only alongside your original licence.
When you request a quote, mention that you hold an Indian licence: the agency will confirm in writing which documents it needs. Our guide to driving licences in Mauritius covers age and experience conditions in detail.
Driving on the left: familiar, with a few differences
In India, the Rules of the Road Regulations ask drivers to keep left, and Mauritius drives on the left too. What changes is the style rather than the side.
- Speed cameras are common: keep to the posted limits, which change often between towns and open roads.
- At roundabouts, give way to traffic already on the roundabout, coming from your right.
- Seat belts are for everyone in the car, and young children need a suitable child seat: book it with the car.
- Roadside police checks are frequent: keep your licence, IDP, passport and rental agreement in the car.
Airport pick-up at SSR
International flights land at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) International Airport in the south-east of the island. Most licensed agencies meet you at arrivals with a name sign, do the inspection in the car park and hand over the keys there, so you can drive straight to your hotel. Give your flight number when booking so the agency can follow any delay. See our SSR airport car rental page and airport arrival guide.
Family-friendly cars: 7-seaters and SUVs
Travelling with parents, children and plenty of luggage? A 7-seat MPV keeps everyone in one vehicle. Remember that with the third row in use, a compact 7-seater has little boot space: for 6 or 7 adults with large suitcases, a bigger van or two cars may be more comfortable. The list below shows the 7-seaters and SUVs online now; for more choice, see our 7 to 9-seater and van page.
Prices and payment: Mauritian rupees
All prices on RentCar.mu are in Mauritian rupees (Rs, MUR), not Indian rupees: the two currencies share the name but not the value. Cars currently start from Rs 1,300 per day. Booking online is free and needs no card: you pay the agency at pick-up, by card or in cash in Mauritian rupees, and a card in the main driver's name is usually needed for the deposit hold.
Fuel is sold at a single national price: unleaded is Rs 77.70 per litre since 29 September 2026. Our fuel price page and budget calculator help you estimate the total.
