"When to go to Mauritius?" is the first question you ask when planning a trip — and the answer depends on what you're after: beaches and relaxation, diving, surfing, hiking, or simply the best weather-to-price ratio. Good news: Mauritius is enjoyable year-round, with a mild tropical climate and a sea that never really drops below 22 °C. Here's how to choose the right time, month by month.
Two seasons, not four
In the southern hemisphere, Mauritius has a tropical climate with two seasons reversed from Europe. There's no distinct spring or autumn: you have the austral summer, hot and humid, and the austral winter, cooler and drier. Coast and altitude add nuance — the west is always drier and warmer, the east windier, the central highlands noticeably cooler and wetter.
The austral summer (November to April): hot, humid, cyclonic
This is the hot season: 28 to 33 °C by day, high humidity, sea at 27-28 °C — ideal for swimming and snorkelling. The vegetation is lush and it's peak tropical-fruit season (lychees in December, mangoes, pineapples). The flip side: sudden but usually brief tropical downpours, sometimes heavy heat, and above all the cyclone season.
December and the first half of January are the tourist high season (austral summer + festive period + southern-hemisphere holidays): stunning, but the priciest and busiest time. January to March, by contrast, offers low prices… at the cost of weather to keep an eye on.
The austral winter (May to October): dry, mild, sunny
This is the dry season and the most comfortable time to visit. Expect 22 to 26 °C by day, drier air, often clear skies and a sea at 22-24 °C (cool but very swimmable). The trade winds blow mostly on the east coast, making it the kitesurf and windsurf season. July and August are the coolest months: you may want a light sweater in the evening, especially inland.
This season is ideal for hiking (Le Morne Brabant, Black River Gorges), cultural visits and long beach days without oppressive humidity. May-June and September-October are often considered the best months of the year, outside European holidays.
The cyclone season: what to know
The official cyclone season runs from November to April, with peak risk from January to March. This doesn't mean a cyclone hits every trip: most systems pass offshore and mainly bring swell, wind and rain. But an approaching cyclone can shut the island down for a day or two (class warnings, closures of shops and beaches).
If you travel during this period, a few habits help: follow the local forecast and cyclone bulletins, take cancellation insurance, leave slack in your schedule, and always follow the instructions of the authorities and your accommodation. Outside cyclones, summer stays very pleasant — it's a risk to know, not a no-go.

- February: the hottest and most humid month, cyclone peak, low rates.
- March: still hot, end of the rainy season, good price/weather balance late in the month.

- May: start of the dry season, mild and pleasant, few crowds — excellent.
- June: dry and sunny, mild temperatures, one of the best months outside holidays.
- July: cool and sometimes windy (especially east and centre), dry, whale season at Rodrigues.
- August: similar to July, kitesurf, busy with European summer holidays.
- September: dry, sunny, warming sea, a lovely and quiet period.
- October: ideal — warm but not excessive, dry, before the summer humidity, low crowds.
- November: returning heat, greening vegetation, before high season — very good value.
- December: hot and festive, high season from mid-December, the highest prices.
Which time for your activity?
- Beach and swimming: year-round; warmest water from December to April.
- Diving and snorkelling: best visibility and warm sea in austral summer (Dec-Apr), calm too in late winter.
- Surfing: south-west swell in austral winter (May to September), spots like Tamarin.
- Kitesurf and windsurf: austral-winter trade winds (June to September), east coast (Belle Mare, Le Morne).
- Hiking: austral winter (May to October), dry and cool.
- Dolphins (west coast): year-round, at first light; calmer sea outside the trade winds.
- Humpback whales: July to October, mostly around Rodrigues and offshore.
Prices and crowds by season
High season (mid-December to early January, plus the European school holidays of July-August) pushes up flight and hotel prices and fills the northern beaches. Low season (January-March, outside the festive period) offers the best rates but coincides with the rainy and cyclone season.
The best value windows are clearly the shoulder seasons: May-June and September-October. You get dry, sunny weather, reasonable prices and less crowded sites. Whatever the season, booking your rental car in advance secures a good rate — especially around the holidays.
In short: for a first, hassle-free trip, aim for May-June or September-October. For the warmest water and a festive mood, December. For low prices while accepting the weather risk, January-February.
