Cheap car rental in Mauritius: how to pay less without nasty surprises

Season, rental length, category, local agency, hidden fees, deposit: how to rent a car for less in Mauritius, with real market figures, without falling for informal rentals.

Short answer: in Mauritius, an economy city car rents from around Rs 1,200 per day (~€26) in low season from a licensed local agency, insurance included. In high season the same car is more like Rs 1,800 to 2,800 (~€38 to €60). These ranges come from our car rental price barometer (rentcar.mu/barometre-prix), our reference page for prices. Here is how to land at the bottom of the range.

Daily prices by category

  • Economy: Rs 1,200-1,800 (low), Rs 1,500-2,200 (mid), Rs 1,800-2,800 (high season).
  • SUV / 4x4: Rs 2,500-3,500 (low), Rs 2,800-4,000 (mid), Rs 3,200-4,800 (high).
  • Van / 9-seater: Rs 3,200-4,200 (low), Rs 3,500-4,800 (mid), Rs 4,000-5,500 (high).
  • Luxury: Rs 4,500-7,000 (low), Rs 5,000-8,000 (mid), Rs 6,000-10,000 (high).

Low season runs April to June and September; mid season February-March and October-November; high season December-January and July-August.

The levers that really cut the price

  • Travel in low season if your dates are flexible: the top of the economy range drops from Rs 2,800 to Rs 1,800.
  • Rent by the week: most agencies lower the daily rate, often by 10 to 20%.
  • Pick the right category: a city car is enough for most couples and small families, an SUV roughly doubles the daily cost.
  • Book with a licensed local agency: often 20 to 40% cheaper than international brands, with the same legal guarantees.
  • Compare like for like: airport pick-up, additional driver, unlimited mileage, full-to-full fuel policy and the insurance excess.

Deposit and excess

The deposit usually ranges from Rs 10,000 to 35,000 depending on the vehicle and the excess, ideally as a card pre-authorisation released after return. If an agency asks for cash, get a signed receipt. An offer 10% cheaper with an excess twice as high is not a bargain.

Beware the too-cheap deal

Cars advertised far below the barometer ranges on social media are often private cars rented without a licence. A legal rental car has two yellow plates (front and rear), the sign of a PSV licence. With a white or black front plate, the rental insurance simply does not exist, and an accident can cost you everything you saved and much more.
